While we all strive for a healthy working environment, unfortunately, that is not the reality. An unhealthy work environment may not be readily identifiable and can take subtle forms. Problems may arise unintentionally and develop through any miscommunication and misinformation about the rights and duties of student workers and their employer.

CUPE 2626 members now include Academic Workers, Lifeguards, and Residence Life Workers with distinct rights and obligations defined in their respective Collective Agreements. As the CUPE 2626 family continues to grow, new problems will arise, and we are here to help. Whether you experience minor or serious issues in the workplace, you have the right to expect a healthy, productive work environment and to be represented as an Employee. CUPE 2626 exists to help you, no matter the reason.

All issues brought to our attention are taken seriously and CUPE 2626 adapts its approach according to the specific situation you are experiencing. There are multiple ways to address a work-related matter (both formally and informally) depending on the member’s preferences and the issue at hand. Speaking out against workplace issues should not stigmatize you in your workplace, your department, or among professors. In fact, reporting unsafe conditions is an important mechanism that helps ensure and maintain a healthy work environment for everyone.

Each department or academic unit (2626) or subunit (2626-1 and 2626-3) has the right to have a steward for every 30 members of CUPE 2626 (or portion thereof) with
active contracts currently or in any semester during the previous year. Stewards have the obligation to consult the members of their respective department or academic unit (2626) or subunit (2626-1 and 2626-3) to assess their needs and their concerns in order to communicate them to the Stewards Council.

If you have any questions or you would like to talk to someone about a situation that makes you uncomfortable, you can contact us. All matters are handled anonymously.
