To our members and our community,
We at CUPE 2626 stand in solidarity with those fighting against white supremacy, racism and anti-Blackness in Canada, the United States, and internationally.
The recent murders of George Floyd and Regis Korchinski-Paquet are part of an ongoing pattern of white supremacy, racism and anti-Blackness. These horrendous acts of police violence are only one aspect of systemic oppression. As a union and a community, we believe that we should move beyond recognition.
To ignore that this is a systemic problem is to be willfully ignorant of the many killings of Black people by police officers that have taken place over the years.
We stand in solidarity with those in rage, in pain, in mourning, and in protest.
We emphasize that to ignore the work, education, activism, and community care and organizing that has been continuously done by Black people to fight white supremacy, racism, and anti-Blackness is also an act of willful ignorance.
We must not ignore the fact that white supremacy, racism, and anti-Blackness is present in our own community. The number of race-based cardings on the uOttawa campus is one of the ways white supremacy, racism, and anti-Blackness is present in our own community.
We stand in solidarity with those fighting for justice and for their lives.
In solidarity,
CUPE 2626
