FAQ

AM I A MEMBER OF CUPE 2626-1 ( LIFEGUARDS)?

To know if you are a member, check the date on the contract you signed with the University (or the job posting) under the section called Job Classification.

You are a CUPE 2626-1 ( LIFEGUARDS) member if you are an Employee of University of Ottawa in the City of Ottawa employed as lifeguard, head guard and swim instructor, save and except supervisors and persons above the rank of supervisor.

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE?

If there are vacancies on the Executive Committee, you can:

  1. Be appointed by any member ( including you) at a general meeting to fill a position and be elected by the members;
  2. Be appointed by a member of the Executive Committee and then be elected by this committee. In this case, you will occupy your position on an interim basis; the post will be considered vacant at the next General Assembly, at which time elections will take place. You can then re-submit your candidacy.
WHAT SHOULD I DO TO JOIN ANOTHER COMMITTEE?

There are several committees within the union. To find out more, contact us.

WHAT IS A COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT?

It is a written agreement between Union members and their Employer. A Collective Agreement contains clauses relating to the conditions of employment as well as the rights, privileges and obligations of the Employer, the Union and the Employees.

WHAT IS A GRIEVANCE?

A member or the Union may file a grievance against the Employer if rights have not been respected and the matter cannot be resolved informally.
